Triesch Residence by Ray Kappe

Kleinmachnow, Germany

The Triesch Residence by Ray Kappe in Kleinmachnow on the outskirts of Berlin, due for completion in 2023, is a unique architectural project in Germany. Building owner Lars Triesch was able to secure the services of star architects Ray and Finn Kappe from Los Angeles. The two-storey low-rise building made of redwood timber in prefabricated timber construction impresses with its open floor plan, in which living areas merge into one another like film sequences. The building is made almost entirely of wood, including red oak and Douglas fir, which creates pleasant acoustics. The living and dining area and the open-plan kitchen are located on the first floor. The master bedroom is reminiscent of a spacious hotel suite. Lars Triesch wanted modern architecture with personal charm. That was one reason why he was immediately impressed by the designs of star architect Ray Kappe when he first saw his house in the documentary "Coast Modern".

The architect

Ray Kappe is an American architect and educator who retired in 1972 as founding chair of the Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and co-founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). in 2003, he began working with Living Homes to design modular homes. Kappe continues to be active in architectural theory and practice, with a focus on sustainability and the prefabrication of housing.

Despite building regulations and insulation requirements, the project shows that we can build different houses in Germany too!

Lars Triesch

Lars Triesch was the client for this exciting architectural project. Architects Raymond "Ray" and Finn Kappe were responsible for the general planning. One structural challenge was the careful sealing of building penetrations against water. For this purpose, DOYMA supplied the Quadro-Secura® BHP single-ply system for buildings with basements as well as Curaflex® and Curaflex Nova® sealing inserts, which were installed by the contractors OIB Original in Berlin GmbH from Berlin .
