BASF TDI plant

Ludwigshafen, Germany

In 2015 BASF inaugurated a plant for the production of TDI (toluene diisocyanate) with a capacity of 300,000 tons at its site in Ludwigshafen. The investment sum, including the preliminary stages, amounted to over 1 billion euros.

This is the largest investment at the site to date and has created 200 additional jobs.

The TDI plant consists of plant sections for the production of DNT (dinitrotoluene), TDA (toluene diamine) and TDI (toluene diisocyanate). In addition, the precursors that are important for the Verbund were modernized and expanded. The infrastructure, i.e. the supply of steam, electricity and water, was also expanded.
TDI is an important raw material for the specialty plastic polyurethane. The material is used to a large extent in the furniture industry (upholstery and mattresses) and in the automotive industry.

I congratulate the company on this seminal event. It is an innovative step and an important building block for maintaining the industrial base in Germany.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Sigmar Gabriel

The client was BASF SE, who awarded the construction project based on the specifications. One of the structural challenges was to ensure proper fire protection sealing and to guarantee water pressure tightness in accordance with the client's structural requirements. To this end, DOYMA supplied sealing and fire protection systems via its trading partner Eduard Züblin AG from Karlsruhe. The contractors for the construction project were Fluor from Haarlem in the Netherlands and Hertel GmbH from Leipzig.
