The Münchehofe wastewater treatment plant, maintained by Berliner Wasserbetriebe, treats the wastewater of around 300,000 people. It is located in the Brandenburg municipality of Hoppegarten and was equipped with two new treatment stages, flocculation filtration and process water treatment, in 2024. These new purification stages target the residues of the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus, which cannot be completely removed in biological purification. Although these nutrients are in demand as fertilizers in agriculture, they are undesirable in bodies of water.
Safeguarding drinking water sustainably
"We have thus invested in improving the quality of the sensitive Spree-Havel river system," emphasized Frank Bruckmann, CEO of Berliner Wasserbetriebe. In this way, Wasserbetriebe was able to obtain 70 percent of the drinking water for the German capital from bank filtrate. This is infiltrated river water that has been naturally purified on its way downstream.
Hydro-Ingenieure Planungsgesellschaft mbH from Düsseldorf was responsible for planning the extension. One structural challenge was the careful sealing of flexible, pre-insulated plastic pipes, flexible cable protection pipes and the subsequent sealing of pipes that had already been laid. For this purpose, DOYMA supplied Curaflex® Quick in C in V4A and Curaflex Nova® Senso sealing systems via Bär & Ollenroth KG from Berlin, which were installed by the contractors PORR and Overmann Verkehrswegebau from Rangsdorf-Groß Machnow.
