With almost four million visitors a year, Zoo Berlin is the most visited zoo in Europe. With around 1,200 species, Zoo Berlin is one of the most species-rich zoos in the world. From gigantic elephants to fascinating venomous spiders, there is a unique variety of species for young and old to discover at Zoo Berlin.
It was founded in 1844 as Germany's first zoo and is one of the oldest zoos in the world.
The new rhino house will be an exciting new world of experience. The near-natural habitats will be a new home for the endangered rhinoceros, along with other animal species. The 25-metre-high tower, which will stand at the center of the rhino enclosure, will set an example for the endangered animals.
The structure is to be visually inspired by other historical buildings at the zoo, such as the elephant pagoda, which was destroyed during the Second World War. Thanks to the special architecture of the tower, zoo visitors will be even closer to the animals in future. In future, rhinoceroses will be on display alongside pustel pigs and tapirs.
The impressive rhino house can be found between the Löwentor entrance, Hippo Bay and the "Hans im Glück" petting zoo.
With our decision to increasingly use wood as a building material, we are taking an unconventional path, but one that protects the climate and resources and promises a long service life.

The client, Zoologischer Garten Berlin AG, commissioned the architect Kieran Stanley from the architectural firm dan perlman to plan and build the zoo's adventure world. The task was to seal existing pipe penetrations against pressing water. The construction company Martin Bruch Haustechnik GmbH from Velten installed the Curaflex Nova® Uno products, which were supplied by DOYMA trading partner Reisser AG from Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
