roots – Germany's tallest wooden skyscraper

With roots in Hamburg, a unique 19-storey wooden high-rise building with a height of approx. 65 metres and the highest of its kind in Germany is currently being built. The innovative building will in future be part of the entreé for the Elbbrückenquartier in Hamburg's HafenCity. A vision in Hamburg to redensify in a climate-neutral way using wood as a building material.

A total of 5,500 cubic metres of softwood will be used in this project. With this construction method, the project developer Garbe Immobilien-Projekte is creating a best case and making a contribution to climate-efficient and resource-saving project development. Furthermore, this project contributes to the reduction of the CO2 footprint and also takes into account the limitation of noise emissions.

A truly successful symbiosis between urbanity and the environment on a gross floor area of around 20,600 square metres. 181 residential units, including 128 condominiums and 53 publicly subsidised flats, are being built in the design of the Hamburg architectural firm Störmer Murphy and Partners, which combines high-end architecture with the increasing desire to be close to nature. Interesting lines of sight to the harbour, HafenCity or the city centre will be created through the natural qualities of wood and light, a 600-square-metre communal courtyard. In addition, an interactive exhibition by the German Wildlife Foundation will be integrated. Completion is planned for 2024. The sealing systems for this sophisticated, sustainable and architecturally valuable project, which involves an investment volume of around 140 million euros, come from DOYMA.

With our decision to increasingly use wood as a building material, we are taking an unconventional path that nevertheless protects the climate and resources, as well as promising a long service life.
