2021 - Construction completion summer 2022
Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH
Leipzig - Germany
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ is one of the world's leading research centres in the field of environmental research.
Biodiversity, functioning ecosystems, clean water, intact soils are natural foundations of life that the UFZ researches and, based on excellent research, points out ways for a sustainable use of these resources for the benefit of man and the environment.
The UFZ was founded on 12 December 1991 under the name UFZ-Environmental Research Centre Leipzig-Halle GmbH and has sites in Leipzig, Halle, Magdeburg, Bad Lauchstädt and Falkenberg. The UFZ is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.
The construction of a new research building 7.3. on the UFZ site in the Leipzig Science Park, Permoserstraße 15, is planned. A laboratory and office building, 38 metres high, with almost 4,600 square metres of usable space for around 170 researchers of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) will be built here. The building is expected to be completed in summer 2022. With the new research building, the UFZ will expand its excellent working conditions and new perspectives at the Leipzig site to make important contributions to climate and resource protection, the energy turnaround and integrative environmental protection and sustainable chemistry.
About half of the floor space is available to staff members who focus on issues related to chemicals and the environment, for example how knowledge of chemicals can be linked to biological assessments in order to evaluate risks to humans and the environment. Another 2,000 square metres will be used by staff to research the possibilities of using bacteria to produce energy sources such as hydrogen and other valuable chemical substances from sunlight and carbon dioxide in an environmentally friendly way. The remaining 300 square metres are reserved for common areas - these include a lecture room as well as social, communication and break rooms.
