2015
BASF TDI-building
Ludwigshafen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
In 2015, BASF inaugurated a plant for the production of TDI (toluene diisocyanate) with a capacity of 300,000 tons at its Ludwigshafen site. The total investment, including the preliminary stages, amounted to over € 1 billion.
This largest investment to date at the location created 200 additional jobs. The TDI plant consists of plant parts for the production of DNT (dinitrotoluene), TDA (toluenediamine) and TDI (toluenediisocyanate). In addition, the preliminary stages that are important for Verbund have been modernized and expanded.
The infrastructure, i.e. the supply of steam, electricity and water, was also expanded. TDI is an important starting material for the special plastic polyurethane. It is used to a large extent in the furniture industry (elastic foams for mattresses, upholstery or wood coatings) and in the automotive industry (seat upholstery).
